The postnatal period is such an exciting time for a new parent, there is so much to learn and experience. Some people breeze through this period without much thought, however some mothers experience anxiety that can be very debilitating.
Maternal anxiety is a topic that is recently coming into the limelight as more women speak up about their experiences. It’s close relative, Postnatal Depression is well documented and some of the symptoms may be similar, but they can feel very different.
The effect that maternal anxiety has on a mothers day to day life with a newborn can vary, however a lot of the symptoms are similar but to varying degrees.
It is hard to define anxiety as everybody’s perception is different, how we feel, think and see the world. We are all unique in our experiences, in our past and what we expect for the future.
Symptoms of Maternal Anxiety:
Feeling depressed (Anxiety is a common symptom of depression)
Difficulty focusing, flitting from one task to another
Not able to prioritise
Feeling unable to cope.
Not enjoying life
Not being able to ‘Let Go’
There are many more symptoms that are signs that you may have maternal anxiety, so if you are concerned then have a chat to your local support systems that are in place.
Maternal anxiety can seem so overwhelming whilst you are going through, it, however there are many things that you can do yourself at home to reduce the symptoms or even get rid of it all together.
I know it’s hard to grab any sleep with young children, but if you can squeeze in a quick power nap then everything seems so much easier and clearer.

Meditation & Relaxation techniques
Meditation is such a powerful way to reduce anxiety and if you use it on a daily basis it will help you keep anxiety at bay forever. It has been used for centuries for relaxation and also to help clear the mind of overwhelm and clutter.
Meditation can be done in 15 minutes if you are stretched for time but the effects will last all day. The more you do it the more beneficial it will be. I personally love The Honest Guys, they have a channel on You Tube which is free to listen too. Pop some headphones on and relax away.
Again they have been around for centuries and can be an absolute life saver. Add a few drops of lavender or German Chamomile onto a makeup pad and sniff as needed.
Maternal anxiety can be so overwhelming but you can take pro active steps to reduce the symptoms. Life is so busy and overwhelming when you have young children, so make sure you ask for help. If you are concerned about your anxiety then make sure you get advice from your local support systems.
